Checking for a Warrant in Kent County
A warrant check in Kent County begins with a court file, not a database. No county agency posts a searchable roster of outstanding warrants. The Sheriff's Office Administrative Unit enters warrant data and keeps the agency record, yet its public pages offer no lookup form. Four channels are left. The state case-search portal gives a free public summary. The District Court clerk holds traffic and misdemeanor files, the Circuit Court clerk holds felony, juvenile, and family files, and the Sheriff's Office keeps the law-enforcement record behind the order. Pick the channel that matches the case.
- Open Maryland Judiciary Case Search, accept the terms, and complete the CAPTCHA.
- Search by case or citation number, or enter the exact name and narrow to Kent County, court system, and case type.
- Read the case event history for a warrant, failure-to-appear, bond, recall, or satisfaction entry.
- Call the clerk: District Court 410-810-3360, Circuit criminal and juvenile 410-778-7477.
- If nothing appears, call the Sheriff's Office at 410-778-2279 and ask whether it holds an agency record.
Note: Case Search is a clerk-updated summary, so a recall can trail the docket by a day or more.
Why Kent County Has No Public Active-Warrant List
Plenty of counties post a warrant list you can scroll through. Kent County is not one of them. On September 11, 2026, a check of the Sheriff's Office site, the state court directories, and the town pages turned up no public active-warrant search, no most-wanted roster, and no warrant hotline, and there is no online recall form either. So a Kent County warrant search has to run one case at a time rather than down a published list. What the sheriff does instead is report significant activity through local news and social media, which is not a live status source for an outstanding warrant. The court files and agency records still exist behind the scenes, so the information is there if you confirm it case by case. The Sheriff's Office home page describes an agency that serves legal papers at the direction of the courts, which is the closest thing to an official window on how warrants get handled here.
That covers the agency half in Kent County. The clerk still holds the case-file half.
Kent County Warrant Types
Maryland uses a short set of warrant labels, and the label on the paper decides which Kent County office you call. An arrest warrant authorizes custody on a charge. A bench warrant follows a missed court obligation. A preset bench warrant carries a bond the court fixed in advance. A body attachment brings a witness or civil party before the judge. A criminal summons is a notice to appear. A search warrant authorizes a search, not a status check on a person.
| Warrant Type | How It Arises | Who Issues It |
|---|---|---|
| Arrest warrant | A charge and probable cause | Commissioner or judge |
| Bench warrant | A missed date, an unanswered citation, or a forfeited bail | The judge in the case |
| Preset bench warrant | A bench warrant with a bond already set | The judge in the case |
| Body attachment | A disobeyed subpoena or civil order | The issuing court |
| Criminal summons | A charge filed with a notice to appear | Commissioner or judge |
| Search warrant | Probable cause tied to a place | District or Circuit judge |
What the Case Search Portal Can and Cannot Show
The current Case Search and Record Portal launched March 14, 2026 and replaced the older interface. What the public gets stayed much the same: free case summaries, a terms page, and a CAPTCHA before results appear. The limits matter as much as the reach. Exact names are the default. A partial last name needs the first character plus a percent sign, broad searches stop at 600 results, and confidential matters are omitted. Clerk entry timing varies across Kent County, so a new event may not show yet. The portal notice also warns against using it for background checks.
| Field | What to Enter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Case Number | Case or citation number | Best route with paperwork |
| Party Type | Person | Used for the name route |
| Names | Name as the court spells it | Exact by default |
| Court System | District or Circuit | Traffic compared with felony |
| Case Type | Traffic, Criminal, Civil | Traffic narrows fastest |
| County | Kent County | Statewide returns too much |
| Terms and CAPTCHA | Acknowledgement | Required first |
The Case Search FAQ explains the wildcard and currentness rules.
Inside a Kent County Warrant Record
No Kent County warrant entry is reproduced here; these fields come from the court's own recall form, the Maryland Rules, and the columns Case Search displays. Read the identifying fields first, then the status fields. The first group tells you whether the record matches the right person. The second tells you whether the order is still live.
| Case Number | Court prefix, case type, year, and sequence, in the shape CR-25-000000; the clerk supplies the digits. |
|---|---|
| Warrant Control Number | An internal number some order forms assign to match paper to file. |
| Warrant Type | Arrest, bench, preset bench, criminal summons, body attachment, or search. |
| Charging Document | Statement of charges, information, or indictment. |
| Issuing Court | The District or Circuit Court whose judge or commissioner ordered it. |
| Issue and Service Dates | When it was signed and, if public, when it was served. |
| Bond | Amount and type where the court set one. |
| Status | Issued, served, recalled, satisfied, or cleared. |
| Access Flags | Sealed, shielded, expunged, juvenile, or no electronic record. |
District Court or Circuit Court: Finding the Right Clerk
Both Kent County courts sit in one building on North Cross Street in Chestertown, and that hides a real split. The District Court hears traffic, misdemeanors, certain felonies, ordinance violations, and bail, and its clerk keeps those files. The Circuit Court handles serious felonies, jury trials, family, and juvenile cases. Clerk Sherise L. Kennard's office keeps those files, and its criminal and juvenile line is separate from the main number.
| Court | What It Hears | Where to Ask |
|---|---|---|
| District Court | Traffic, misdemeanors, certain felonies, ordinances, bail | 410-810-3360 |
| Circuit Court | Serious felonies, jury trials, family, juvenile | 410-778-7477 |
| Commissioner | Statements of charges, initial appearance, bail | 410-810-3370 |
The Kent County court directory lists all three.
Issuing and Serving Warrants in Kent County
Issuing a warrant is a judicial act. A District Court commissioner can issue a summons or an arrest warrant on a statement of charges when probable cause and the statutory conditions are met. A judge issues bench warrants. A Circuit judge can order a warrant after an information or an indictment. Service is different. It is a law-enforcement act, and the Sheriff is not always the one carrying it out. Town police and the Maryland State Police can also arrest, so ask which agency the Kent County court directed to serve the order.
Kent County Sheriff's Office
104 Vickers Drive, Unit B
Chestertown, MD 21620
410-778-2279
The agency's services page covers court security and civil process alongside warrant work.
Keep that contact page close in Kent County. It carries the address and phone the agency publishes for records questions.
The Kent Commissioner's After-Hours Window
The most useful local fact is a set of hours. The District Court Commissioner station in Kent County publishes weekday hours from 8 a.m. to midnight, with on-call coverage overnight and on weekends. Everything else in the warrant chain closes at 4:30. The commissioner is a judicial officer, not a records desk. The station handles statements of charges, initial appearances, and bail, and it can route a question that needs a judge. It is not a warrant search counter. Call before you travel. No bond-window hours and no surrender schedule are published for the county.
If You Have a Warrant in Kent County
Start with the case number. Call the Kent County clerk, confirm the warrant is still outstanding, and ask what the court wants next: a recall request, a payment, a new date, a bond, or an appearance. Get a lawyer early if jail time is possible. The Office of the Public Defender takes eligible clients through its regional offices. One path in Criminal Procedure Article 5-211 is worth knowing. Post the preset bond and the bench warrant is marked satisfied, returning the case to the docket. The charge itself stays open, so treat the bond as a reset rather than an ending.
Important: Talk to a lawyer before you turn yourself in. An active warrant can lead to arrest at a traffic stop or any police contact.
The 104 Vickers Drive Records Request Route
Written and in-person requests both land at the Vickers Drive office, and Sheriff Dennis Hickman's staff route them through him. Expect to show ID, since the published Kent County page says privacy concerns can trigger an entitlement review. Name a record that already exists and explain your connection to it. The agency will not build a record for you. Broad questions get no answer either.
| Criminal Investigation Report | $5.00 |
|---|---|
| Incident Report | $5.00 |
| Traffic Accident Report | $5.00 |
| Warrant Status Search | No published fee; ask the office |
| Certified Court Copy | No published fee; ask the clerk |
Kent County's five-dollar figures cover three report types only. They say nothing about a court copy or a warrant search.
Kent County Warrant Records and Public Access
Maryland starts from openness, then carves out exceptions. The Public Information Act reaches county agencies like the Kent County Sheriff's Office, while court records answer to their own access rules. A case can sit open while a document inside it stays closed. Juvenile records are confidential under state law. So a juvenile warrant can live in a law-enforcement system without ever surfacing in a public Kent County warrant search.
Key Rules:
General Provisions 4-201: a custodian must allow inspection of a public record at a reasonable time.
General Provisions 4-206: reasonable fees may be charged for search, preparation, and copies.
Courts and Judicial Proceedings 3-8A-27: juvenile records are confidential except in narrow cases.
Avoiding Warrant Payment Scams in Kent County
The Maryland Judiciary warns that courts and law enforcement never call or email demanding card or PayPal payment to clear a warrant. Kent County is fertile ground for that scam precisely because no public warrant list exists to disprove a caller's claim. So never pay, and never read a card number over the phone. Hang up and dial the published number for the office involved. A demand to pay tonight is the tell. The Judiciary's scam notice says the same.
